Rat Tail Raddish.

One fun by-product of being part of the CSA is not knowing what vegetables to expect from week to week. This depends on how the weather is, what part of the season, and what pests spare. We were told to expect dings in our summer squash because of a hail storm. Sure enough, there are little dings in the sunny yellow squash which I wouldn’t have noticed.

Our surprise vegetable this week was Rat Tail Raddishes. I was instructed to snip off the ends. I thought they meant only the stem side. I was wrong. The end of the tail is suprisingly fibrous, like biting into sugar cane. They yielded enough for one meal. Grace and I ate them one at a time, like french fries — except the satisfying crunch ended in a nice refreshing raddish sweetness.
